The Oak Bar II

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

In a few hours I’m meeting with former roommate Dusty and his boyfriend Scott for drinks and, I hope, some luxurious dessert at the Oak Bar.
If you haven’t yet sipped their decadent cocktails while listening to the free jazz under the high gilded ceiling, you’re missing out on one of Boston’s most elegant and […]

I’m Back

Monday, May 29th, 2006

Returning to a sunny, 85-degree Boston was no hardship, even though Chicago surprised me with its fabulous array of diverse (and surprisingly cheap) restaurants.
From sundaes at Ghiradelli’s to deep dish pizza at Gino’s East to Swedish brunch at Ann Sather, both my belly and my lac operons stayed busy for all three days.
I’m craving […]

My Kind of Town

Friday, May 26th, 2006

This weekend the Quincy posse and I are heading to Chicago, where I will visit my sister, reminisce at the American Girl Flagship store, and, I hope, eat deep dish pizza.
If you have any restaurant recommendations in Chicago, let’s hear ‘em.
Best wishes for a lovely three-day holiday.

Sushi Express

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

With Ginza one block down and Fugakyu three blocks up, it’s no wonder that people overlook Sushi Express, a tiny, nondescript basement sushi cafe. It’s probably a good thing considering the black-and-white tiled seating area and slim counter bar couldn’t possibly seat more than 10-12 people.
The cheap sushi, not the ambience, is why Sushi […]

The Paramount

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

It was a weekend of good eating.
The morning after my dinner at Douzo I met Bunches for breakfast at The Paramount. The crisp spring weather had beckoned many a Bostonian early from his bed, and by 9:25am, there was already a very long doubling back from the counter past the elevated metal tables through […]

Douzo

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Walking into Douzo, I had little trouble imagining what Tokyo airport must have looked like in the 1970s, despite the fact I have never been to Japan nor was I even in existence until 1981. The massive wooden lighting blocks hover menacingly over the two-tiered dining room, and there’s nary a fixture, panel, or […]

Hajimemashite

Friday, May 19th, 2006

I’m turning Japanese, today, at least for a few short hours, when the Quincy posse and I dine at Douzo, Boston’s newest sushi restaurant in Back Bay.
My Boston sushi experiences are rather limited, and I’m looking for some good recommendations. Tell me whose wasabi you whistle for, whose sashimi you sing to, and whose […]

Rami’s

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

After a weekend of eating fried food and red wine I felt it necessary to cleanse my palate with some fresh vegetables and simple proteins. As I gazed out of the blurry window of the #66 bus, I contemplated assembling some sort of pear, spinach, and gorgonzola salad, but then scowled, remembering I had […]

Emperor Garden

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to go back in time and eat Chinese food, visit Emperor Garden.
With an hour to spare before the curtain rose on Boston Ballet’s Carmen, my roommate and I were more than happy to take advantage of the Wang Center’s proximity to Chinatown. Keeping the theme of Trying […]

James’s Gate Restaurant & Pub

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

I unexpectedly visited Galway yesterday.
At least that’s what it felt like upon stepping into James’ Gate Restaurant & Pub, an anything-but-faux Irish pub in Jamaica Plain.

The windowless, urine-colored exterior belies the quaint, compartmentalized bar and restaurant inside, where simple wooden tables are crowded around a darkened hearth. If the random Irish road signs and […]
