Bukowski’s Tavern
Most Bostonians already know about the great lunchtime deal offered at Bukowski's, but for those of you who have been living on some nearby moon, here's the info.
Monday through Friday before 8pm Bukowski's Tavern (in Boston and Cambridge) offers a $1.69 burger special. A third-pound beef patty is cooked to your liking and served with onions, pickles, lettuce, and tomatoes on a flour bun. Cheese and fries are each only $1 extra.
I've frequented the Cambridge location often, but yesterday for the first time ate at the Boston branch. Same quality burger with a slightly nicer waitress and a slightly dingier table. The design motif of both locations revolves around the "Dead Author's" club, wall graffiti, and a sort of "F*ck you, just eat it" pub grub menu.
If you're not intent on spending less than $5 for your meal, try the sweet potato fries ($6) instead of just the dollar plain ones. They're out of this world and served with a horseradish mayonnaise sauce. Those in the know also tell me the White Trash Dip and Peanut Butter burger are also good picks.
My only beef with the place (don't say you didn't see that pun coming) is that their extensive selection of table condiments carries all the Heinz brands (57 sauce, relish, etc.) except ketchup. Is "House Recipe" really that much less expensive? But I got over that small blunder and you should too.
